Our verdict: Hydrogen is a focused, stable drum machine for programming beats and practice tracks. It does one job well, but it is not a DAW and does not run as a plugin inside one.
About Hydrogen
Hydrogen is a community-developed drum machine that has been around for over 20 years. You program patterns in a grid, chain them in the song editor and play them through sample-based drumkits, with control over each instrument, sample layer and note.
It responds to MIDI keyboards and pads, can be automated over MIDI or OSC, and offers time-stretching and pitch shifting for samples. Many extra drumkits can be downloaded from inside the app. Songs can be exported to audio or MIDI files.
What it does well
- Pattern sequencer. Program beats in a grid and arrange them into songs.
- Drumkit library. Sample-based kits with layers; more kits can be downloaded in the app.
- Detailed note control. Set velocity, pan, pitch and probability per note.
- MIDI and OSC. Play from MIDI pads and automate the app via MIDI or OSC.
- Export. Render songs to audio files or export them as MIDI.
Who it is for
Good fit
Drummers, guitarists and songwriters who need drum tracks for practice or demos.
Look elsewhere
Producers who want a drum plugin inside their DAW; Hydrogen runs as a standalone app.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Free and open source
- Simple, fast pattern programming
- Many downloadable drumkits
- Stable, actively maintained
Cons
- No VST plugin version
- Interface looks dated
- Limited to drums and samples
How to install Hydrogen
Download the 64-bit Windows installer from the project's GitHub releases, which the hydrogen-music.org downloads page links to. In Preferences → Audio System, choose your audio driver and lower the buffer size if playback from MIDI pads feels delayed. Open the Sound Library to download extra drumkits.
