Our verdict: VCV Rack Free is the easiest way to learn and play modular synthesis without buying hardware. It runs as a standalone app; using it as a plugin inside a DAW requires the paid Rack Pro.
About VCV Rack
VCV Rack recreates a Eurorack modular system on screen. You add oscillators, filters, envelopes, sequencers and effects as modules and connect them with virtual patch cables, including polyphonic cables that carry up to 16 voices.
Rack 2 Free comes with more than 30 built-in modules, and the VCV Library lists over 2000 more, many of them free. It works with audio interfaces and MIDI controllers. The VST, AU and CLAP plugin version for DAWs is only in Rack Pro, and the VCV Host module for loading VST plugins inside Rack is sold separately.
What it does well
- Virtual patch cables. Wire modules together exactly like a hardware modular, with polyphonic cables.
- Module library. 30+ built-in modules and access to more than 2000 in the VCV Library.
- MIDI and audio I/O. Multi-interface audio or CV input/output and polyphonic MIDI for hardware control.
- Module selections. Save, share and reuse groups of modules and their settings.
- Module SDK. Develop your own modules in C++ with the VCV SDK.
