Our verdict: Bitdefender Antivirus Free is a quiet, low-maintenance antivirus that mostly stays out of your way. It covers the basics well, but it is Windows-only, needs a Bitdefender Central account and leaves out the extra shields of the paid editions.
About Bitdefender Antivirus Free
Bitdefender Antivirus Free is the no-cost Windows product from Bitdefender. It scans files in real time, watches running apps for suspicious behavior with Advanced Threat Defense and isolates anything it flags. Bitdefender says the free license has no time limit.
The free version also blocks known malicious websites and includes a basic Bitdefender VPN with 200 MB of traffic per device per day. Anti-tracking, social network protection, a full-system vulnerability scan, the gaming and movie profiles and ransomware file restore are reserved for the paid Antivirus Plus and higher editions. Installation requires signing in to a Bitdefender Central account.
What it does well
- Real-time scanning. Checks files as they are opened, downloaded or copied to the PC.

- Web protection. Blocks known malicious and phishing sites while you browse.
- Basic ransomware protection. Detects and stops common ransomware before it encrypts files.
- Bitdefender VPN (basic). Up to 200 MB of encrypted traffic per device per day at no cost.
