Our verdict: Free Download Manager is a solid free replacement for paid download accelerators. It resumes broken downloads, takes over browser downloads through extensions and also handles torrents. Video downloading needs a separate add-on.
About Free Download Manager
Free Download Manager, or FDM, speeds up large downloads by splitting a file into parts and downloading them in parallel. If the connection drops, it resumes where it stopped instead of starting over, as long as the server supports it.
Official extensions for Chrome and Firefox pass browser downloads to FDM. It also opens magnet links and torrent files, so many users need no separate torrent client. The optional Elephant add-on adds support for downloading videos from various sites.
What it does well
- Segmented downloads. Splits files into parts and downloads them at the same time.
- Resume support. Continues interrupted downloads when the server allows it.
- Browser integration. Official Chrome and Firefox extensions hand downloads to FDM.
- Torrent support. Downloads torrent files and magnet links in the same window.
- Scheduler and speed limits. Plan downloads for later and limit bandwidth so browsing stays fast.
Who it is for
Good fit
People on slow or unstable connections who download large files and want one app for HTTP and torrents.
Look elsewhere
