Our verdict: GPU-Z is the standard tool for checking exactly which graphics card is in a PC and whether it runs at the right clocks and PCI Express speed. It is free, small and runs without installing. It only reads information; for overclocking or fan control you need a separate tool.
About GPU-Z
GPU-Z is developed by TechPowerUp, the site behind a large GPU specifications database. It supports NVIDIA, AMD, ATI and Intel graphics and shows the GPU model, memory size, type, speed and bus width, the default, current and boost clocks and the display adapter details.
The Sensors tab shows live clocks, temperatures, load and power where the card reports them. A built-in render test lets you check that the card's PCI Express link reaches its full speed under load. GPU-Z can also save a backup of the graphics card BIOS and submit an online validation.
What it does well
- Exact GPU identification. Model, GPU chip, revision, memory type and bus width.
- Clock readout. Default, current and boost clocks to spot factory overclocks.
- Sensors tab. Live clocks, temperatures, load and power draw.
- PCI Express test. Render test that checks the PCIe lane configuration.
- BIOS backup. Saves a copy of the graphics card BIOS.
Who it is for
Good fit
Buyers checking a used graphics card and gamers verifying clocks, drivers and PCIe speed.
Look elsewhere
Overclocking or fan control; use MSI Afterburner for that.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Precise graphics card details
- Runs without installation
- Free for personal and commercial use
- Network traffic limited to gpu-z.com
Cons
- Read-only: no overclocking or fan control
- Download requires picking a mirror; the page shows ads
- Closed source and may not be redistributed commercially
How to install GPU-Z
On the TechPowerUp download page choose the Standard Version, click Download and pick a mirror. When you start GPU-Z it asks whether to install it or run it once without installation; running it standalone is fine. Branded ASUS ROG builds are also offered but are optional.
