Our verdict: LibreCAD is a solid free choice for 2D technical drawings when AutoCAD LT is overkill or too expensive. It handles layers, blocks, dimensions and DXF files without trials or subscriptions. It does not do 3D, and its DWG support is limited.
About LibreCAD
LibreCAD started as a fork of the community edition of QCad and is developed by volunteers under the GPLv2. It has no trials, subscriptions or license fees and is available in more than 30 languages on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Drawings are saved in the DXF format, which most CAD programs, laser cutters and CNC tools can read. The program covers the usual 2D toolset: lines, arcs, polylines, hatching, layers, blocks, snapping and dimensioning.
What it does well
- Native DXF. Saves drawings in DXF for exchange with other CAD and CNC tools.
- Layers and blocks. Organize drawings and reuse common parts.
- Snapping and dimensions. Precise object snaps plus linear, angular and radial dimensions.
- Over 30 languages. Interface translations maintained by the community.
- Cross-platform. The same program on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Who it is for
Good fit
Students, makers and engineers who draw 2D plans, parts or laser-cut templates.
Look elsewhere
Anyone who needs 3D modeling or full DWG compatibility with AutoCAD.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Free and open source
- No trial, account or subscription
- DXF works with most CAD and CNC tools
- Lightweight
Cons
- 2D only
- Limited DWG support compared with AutoCAD
How to install LibreCAD
Download the 64-bit Windows installer from the latest GitHub release linked on librecad.org; avoid pre-release builds unless you want to test. On first start, set the default unit and paper size. Save in DXF if you need to share drawings with other CAD software.
Questions about LibreCAD
Is LibreCAD free?
Yes. It is open source under the GPLv2 with no trials, subscriptions or license fees.
Can LibreCAD open DWG files?
LibreCAD works natively with DXF. DWG support is limited, so converting DWG files to DXF first is more reliable.
Does LibreCAD do 3D?
No. LibreCAD is a 2D CAD program. For 3D parametric modeling, look at FreeCAD.
