Our verdict: CLion is one of the most capable cross-platform C and C++ IDEs, with code analysis and refactoring that understand real CMake projects. Students, hobbyists and open-source contributors can use it for free. Paid work needs a subscription, and large codebases need a fast PC.
About CLion
CLion works with CMake, Makefile, Meson and other build systems and debugs through GDB or LLDB. On Windows it can use the bundled MinGW toolchain or the Microsoft Visual C++ toolchain if Visual Studio Build Tools are installed. It is also used for embedded development on microcontrollers.
Since 2025 CLion is free for non-commercial use. On first launch you choose the non-commercial license, which needs a JetBrains Account, covers individuals only and sends anonymous usage statistics that cannot be turned off, or a 30-day commercial trial. JetBrains lists the individual commercial subscription at $109 for the first year and $65 from the third year.
What it does well
- C and C++ code insight. Completion, inspections and navigation based on the project's build model.
- Build system support. Opens CMake, Makefile and Meson projects and compilation databases.
- Debugger. GDB and LLDB debugging with breakpoints, watches and memory view.
- Refactoring. Rename, extract function and change signature across the codebase.
- Embedded development. Tools for building, flashing and debugging microcontroller projects.
Who it is for
Good fit
C and C++ students, hobbyists, game and embedded developers who want a full IDE on any OS.
Look elsewhere
Professional developers without a subscription, and people on slow PCs with very large codebases.
