Our verdict: Maya is the standard animation tool in film and game studios, with deep rigging, animation curves, Bifrost effects and Python scripting for pipelines. If you want a studio job in character animation, learning it pays off. For personal projects the full price is hard to justify, and Blender covers much of the same ground for free.

About Autodesk Maya

Maya is Autodesk's professional 3D toolset for modeling, layout, animation, effects and rendering, used by studios for feature films, TV series and games. Its strengths are rigging and character animation: keyframe and non-linear animation, the Graph and Spline editors, and AI tools such as MotionMaker, which generates human, dog and horse motion from a few keys or a path, and ML Deformer for faster rig evaluation. Bifrost builds procedural effects like explosions, water and cloth, LookdevX authors OpenUSD materials, and Arnold is included for rendering.

A subscription costs $2,010 per year, $255 per month or $6,025 for three years. Maya Indie has the full toolset at a lower annual price for artists whose creative revenue and project budgets are under $100,000. The 30-day free trial needs an Autodesk account, cannot be extended and expires on its own if no payment method was entered. Students and teachers can get free one-year educational access.

What it does well

  • Character animation. Keyframe and non-linear animation with Graph and Spline editors.
  • MotionMaker. AI-generated human, canine and horse motion that you refine by hand.
  • Bifrost effects. Visual programming for simulations, procedural rigs and scattering.
  • Arnold and LookdevX. Arnold rendering and renderer-agnostic OpenUSD material authoring.
  • Scripting and APIs. MEL, Python and C++ APIs for custom tools and studio pipelines.
