Our verdict: Mp3tag is the tool to fix a messy music library. It edits tags across hundreds of files at once, pulls album data and covers from online databases and renames files to a consistent pattern. It does not play music, so use it next to your player.
About Mp3tag
Mp3tag is developed by Florian Heidenreich, an independent developer in Dresden, Germany, who releases the Windows version as freeware supported by voluntary donations.
It reads and writes ID3v1, ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4, MP4, WMA, APEv2 and Vorbis Comments across formats such as MP3, FLAC, AAC, ALAC, Opus, WAV and DSF. Repeated tasks can be saved as action groups and run on a whole selection with one click.
What it does well
- Batch tag editing. Change artist, album, year or any field on many files at once.
- Online lookups. Import tags and cover art from Discogs, MusicBrainz and other sources.
- Rename and import. Rename files from tag values or fill tags from file and folder names.
- Replace and actions. Replace text in tags and filenames, with regular expressions, and save steps as action groups.
- Export reports. Export your collection to HTML, RTF or CSV lists using templates.
