Our verdict: UltraISO is a long-standing tool for opening an ISO, changing files inside and saving it again without unpacking. It also converts many other image formats to ISO and keeps boot information. The free version cannot save images over 300 MB, so real use requires the $29.95 license.
About UltraISO
UltraISO is made by EZB Systems. It opens CD and DVD image files in a two-window interface, so you can add, delete and rename files inside an ISO directly and extract files from it. It can make an ISO from a disc or from files on your hard drive, and it keeps or edits the boot record, which is useful for custom bootable discs.
The unregistered version can be used without a time limit, but it shows a registration dialog at start and cannot save images larger than 300 MB. A license costs $29.95, is paid once and includes lifetime updates. The official system requirements were last updated for Windows 10, and the interface looks dated.
What it does well
- Direct ISO editing. Adds, removes and renames files inside an ISO without unpacking it.
- Image conversion. Converts BIN, NRG, MDS, CCD, IMG, DMG, DAA, ISZ and other images to ISO.
- Boot record handling. Keeps, extracts or replaces the boot image of a bootable ISO.
- Create from disc or files. Builds an ISO from a CD or DVD or from folders on your drive.
- Explorer integration. Opens image files with a double click or from the right-click menu.
Who it is for
Good fit
People who need to modify files inside existing ISO images or convert old disc image formats.
Look elsewhere
Anyone who only needs to write an ISO to USB or mount it; Windows and free tools already do that.
