Free PNG to JPG Converter

Convert PNG images to smaller JPG files. You choose the JPEG quality and the background color for transparent areas, and everything happens on your device.

How to convert PNG to JPG

  1. Drop your PNG files onto the box above, or click Choose files to add up to 30 images.
  2. Choose the JPEG quality. 90 is the default and suits photos; drop to 75–80 if you need much smaller files.
  3. If your PNGs have transparent areas, pick the background color that should fill them. White is the default.
  4. Click Convert to JPG and check the new file sizes in the list.
  5. Download each JPG, or all of them at once as a ZIP.

JPG has no transparency

This is the most important difference. A PNG can have transparent or semi-transparent pixels, for example around a logo or a cut-out product photo. JPEG cannot store transparency at all, so those areas have to be filled with a solid color. The converter blends them onto the background color you choose, which also smooths soft edges and shadows correctly.

If the image will be placed on a colored web page or slide, pick that color as the background so the edges do not show a white halo. If you need to keep the transparency, stay with PNG or use PNG to WebP instead.

When JPG is better than PNG

For photographs, JPG is usually several times smaller than PNG with no visible difference at a quality of 85–90. That makes it the better choice for email attachments, upload forms with size limits, online shops and anything that only accepts JPG.

For screenshots, text, charts and flat graphics, JPG is often the worse choice. Its compression blurs sharp edges and adds faint noise around letters. If a screenshot looks smudged after conversion, raise the quality to 95 or keep it as PNG.

Supported files and limitations

  • Accepts PNG files. The format is checked from the file's contents, not only its extension.
  • Up to 30 files at a time, 50 MB each.
  • Images up to 50 megapixels and 16,384 pixels on the longest side. A decoded image needs about 4 bytes of memory per pixel, so a 50-megapixel photo takes around 200 MB while it is processed.
  • Files are processed one at a time in a background thread, so the page stays responsive.

JPEG compression is lossy. Each conversion discards some detail, more at lower quality settings, and converting the JPG back to PNG later does not bring it back. Keep the original PNG if you might need it again.

Metadata and color profiles in the PNG are not kept, and wide-gamut images are converted to sRGB. 16-bit PNG files become 8-bit JPEGs, which is the most JPEG can store.

Privacy and security

Your files are opened and processed by your own browser. The ExeDepot server only delivers this page and its scripts; it never receives your files, their contents or their names. The page loads no third-party scripts or ads, and its Content Security Policy allows connections only back to exedepot.com.

Results exist only in your browser's memory until you download them, and they are discarded when you click Convert more files or close the tab. No online tool can promise perfect security, so keep your browser up to date, and for documents you would never put online consider an offline desktop app such as Caesium Image Compressor.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to the transparent background?

JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent pixels are filled with the background color you pick. White is the default; you can choose any color.

What JPEG quality should I use?

90 is a good default for photos. 75–85 gives much smaller files that still look fine on screens. Use 95 or higher for screenshots and images with text.

Why is my JPG bigger than the PNG?

That can happen with simple graphics that have large flat areas of color, which PNG compresses very well. For such images, PNG is the better format.

Can I convert many PNG files to JPG at once?

Yes. Add up to 30 files, convert them in one go and download them together as a ZIP archive.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Conversion happens in your browser, and no file is sent to a server.
