How to convert AVIF to PNG
- Drop your AVIF files onto the box above, or click Choose files. You can add up to 30 at a time.
- Check the list: each file shows its size and pixel dimensions, and anything that is not really an AVIF image is flagged.
- Click Convert to PNG. The images are converted one after another on your device.
- Download each PNG, or click Download all as ZIP to get them in one archive.
When PNG is the right target
PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so it is the right format for logos, icons, stickers, screenshots and product cut-outs saved from websites as AVIF. It is also a good working copy if you plan to edit the picture in GIMP or Paint.NET, because a PNG can be saved again and again without losing quality.
For ordinary photos PNG is usually the wrong choice: the file becomes many times larger than the AVIF without looking any better. Use AVIF to JPG for photos.
What happens to quality
AVIF images on the web are almost always lossy. Converting to PNG keeps exactly the pixels the browser decodes, compression artifacts included; it does not add lost detail back, and it does not take any more away.
Supported files and limitations
- Accepts AVIF files. The format is checked from the file's contents, not only its extension.
- Up to 30 files at a time, 50 MB each.
- Images up to 50 megapixels and 16,384 pixels on the longest side. A decoded image needs about 4 bytes of memory per pixel, so a 50-megapixel photo takes around 200 MB while it is processed.
- Files are processed one at a time in a background thread, so the page stays responsive.
An animated AVIF becomes a still PNG of its first frame.
HDR, 10-bit and 12-bit AVIF images are saved as 8-bit sRGB PNG, so the brightest highlights and most saturated colors are reduced to the standard range.
EXIF data and color profiles are not carried over.
Your browser's AVIF decoder does the reading. Variants it does not support are reported as unreadable.
Privacy and security
Your files are opened and processed by your own browser. The ExeDepot server only delivers this page and its scripts; it never receives your files, their contents or their names. The page loads no third-party scripts or ads, and its Content Security Policy allows connections only back to exedepot.com.
Results exist only in your browser's memory until you download them, and they are discarded when you click Convert more files or close the tab. No online tool can promise perfect security, so keep your browser up to date, and for documents you would never put online consider an offline desktop app such as GIMP.
Frequently asked questions
Is transparency kept when converting AVIF to PNG?
Yes. PNG has an alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas of the AVIF stay transparent.
Why is the PNG so much larger than the AVIF?
AVIF uses lossy AV1 compression, while PNG stores every pixel without loss. For photos the PNG is normally many times larger; for flat graphics with few colors the difference is smaller.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Your browser decodes the AVIF and writes the PNG on your device. Nothing is sent to ExeDepot or anyone else.
Can I convert AVIF to PNG in Windows without a website?
XnConvert converts whole folders of AVIF files to PNG offline. GIMP opens AVIF and exports PNG with File > Export As.
