How to split a PDF
- Drop one PDF onto the box above, or click Choose file. The tool reads it and shows the number of pages.
- Choose how to split: every page as its own PDF, each range as a separate PDF, or all selected pages in one new PDF.
- For ranges, type the pages, for example 1-3, 5, 8-10. Page numbers start at 1.
- Click Split PDF.
- Download the parts one by one, or all of them as a ZIP.
Three ways to split
Every page as a separate PDF is useful for scanned stacks where each page is its own document, such as receipts or invoices. Each range as a separate PDF cuts a long file into chapters or sections: 1-10, 11-25, 26-40 gives three files.
Selected pages into one PDF is the same as extracting pages: 2, 5, 7-9 produces one document with those five pages, in that order. It is the quickest way to send someone only the part of a contract or a manual they need.
Sizes of the parts
Each part is a complete PDF with its own copy of the fonts and images its pages use. That is why the parts together can be larger than the original, especially when every page uses the same embedded fonts. Nothing on the pages is re-compressed or changed.
To put parts of different documents together afterwards, use Merge PDF.
Supported files and limitations
- Accepts PDF files. The format is checked from the file's contents, not only its extension.
- One file at a time, up to 200 MB, and at most 500 output files.
- Files are processed one at a time in a background thread, so the page stays responsive.
One PDF at a time, up to 200 MB, and at most 500 output files per split. Password-protected PDFs have to be unlocked first.
Bookmarks are not carried over to the parts, form fields may stop working, and digital signatures become invalid in the new files.
Privacy and security
Your files are opened and processed by your own browser. The ExeDepot server only delivers this page and its scripts; it never receives your files, their contents or their names. The page loads no third-party scripts or ads, and its Content Security Policy allows connections only back to exedepot.com.
Results exist only in your browser's memory until you download them, and they are discarded when you click Start over or close the tab. No online tool can promise perfect security, so keep your browser up to date, and for documents you would never put online consider an offline desktop app such as PDFsam Basic.
Frequently asked questions
How do I extract pages from a PDF?
Choose Selected pages into one PDF, type the pages such as 2, 5, 7-9 and click Split PDF. You get one new file with just those pages.
How do I split a PDF into single pages?
Choose Every page as a separate PDF and click Split PDF. Download the pages individually or as one ZIP archive.
Does splitting reduce quality?
No. Pages are copied as they are, with their text, images and fonts unchanged.
Why are the split files bigger than expected?
Each part carries its own copy of the fonts and images its pages need, so shared resources are repeated in every file.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. The PDF is read and split in your browser, on your device.
