Free JPG to PNG Converter

Convert JPG or JPEG images to lossless PNG files in your browser. Camera rotation is applied, nothing is uploaded, and up to 30 images can be converted at once.

How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Drop your JPG or JPEG files onto the box above, or click Choose files. Both extensions are the same format.
  2. Review the list of files with their sizes and dimensions. Files that are not real JPEG images are marked so you can remove them.
  3. Click Convert to PNG. Each photo is decoded and saved as PNG on your device.
  4. Download the PNG files one at a time, or use Download all as ZIP for a batch.

Why convert JPG to PNG

JPG is the standard format for photos because its lossy compression keeps files small. The catch is that every time a JPG is edited and saved again, it loses a bit more quality. Converting to PNG gives you a lossless copy, so further edits, crops and annotations do not add new compression damage.

PNG is also the format many tools expect for screenshots, diagrams and images that will later get a transparent background. Converting the JPG first means you can remove the background in an editor such as GIMP or Paint.NET and save the result without flattening it.

What converting does not do

A PNG made from a JPG is not sharper than the JPG. The blockiness and color noise that JPEG compression created are now stored losslessly, exactly as they were. The background also stays solid: JPG has no transparency, so there is nothing to keep, and you have to remove the background yourself if you want it transparent.

The PNG will be larger, often three to ten times for a photo. For sharing or uploading a photo, the original JPG is usually the better file.

Supported files and limitations

  • Accepts JPG files. The format is checked from the file's contents, not only its extension.
  • Up to 30 files at a time, 50 MB each.
  • Images up to 50 megapixels and 16,384 pixels on the longest side. A decoded image needs about 4 bytes of memory per pixel, so a 50-megapixel photo takes around 200 MB while it is processed.
  • Files are processed one at a time in a background thread, so the page stays responsive.

Rotation stored by the camera in the EXIF orientation tag is applied to the pixels, so photos come out the right way up. Other EXIF data, such as camera model, date and GPS location, is not copied to the PNG, which is useful if you want to share an image without that information.

Images with an embedded color profile such as Adobe RGB or Display P3 are converted to sRGB, and the PNG has no profile attached. CMYK JPEG files from print workflows are decoded by the browser, but colors may shift.

Privacy and security

Your files are opened and processed by your own browser. The ExeDepot server only delivers this page and its scripts; it never receives your files, their contents or their names. The page loads no third-party scripts or ads, and its Content Security Policy allows connections only back to exedepot.com.

Results exist only in your browser's memory until you download them, and they are discarded when you click Convert more files or close the tab. No online tool can promise perfect security, so keep your browser up to date, and for documents you would never put online consider an offline desktop app such as GIMP.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. It stops further loss, but it cannot undo the compression the JPG already has. The PNG looks the same as the JPG.

Is JPEG the same as JPG?

Yes. JPG and JPEG are two extensions for the same format, and this converter accepts both.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. JPG images have no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background. Remove it in an image editor if you need transparency.

Why is my photo sideways in other converters but not here?

Phones often save photos unrotated and add an orientation tag. This converter applies that tag, so the PNG shows the photo the way your phone displays it.

Is the GPS location removed?

Yes. The PNG is created from the pixels only, so EXIF data including GPS coordinates is not included.
