Our verdict: ActivePresenter covers screen recording, video editing and interactive courses in one app, which is rare at this price. The free edition has no time limit and lets you try almost everything, but it is for non-commercial use and watermarks the output of paid features. Course authors get a lot; people who only want quick screen clips have simpler options.
About ActivePresenter
ActivePresenter is made by Atomi Systems. It records the screen, webcam and audio, then edits the recording on a timeline with zoom-n-pan, annotations, cursor effects and green screen. On top of that it builds interactive slides with quizzes and branching and exports them to video, HTML5, PDF, Office documents and SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 or xAPI packages for learning platforms.
One installer serves both the free and paid editions. The Free edition is intended for trial and non-commercial use, has no time limit, and adds a watermark to output that uses non-free features until a license is activated; AI tools are not included. ActivePresenter Standard costs $249 and Pro $499, both one-time per-machine licenses with a year of major upgrades. No account or card is needed to download.
What it does well

- Smart capture. Turns a recorded software walkthrough into slides with mouse actions and callouts.
- Video editing. Cuts, joins, zooms and blurs footage and adds annotations and green screen.
- Interactive quizzes. Adds questions, branching and feedback to slides for training courses.
- SCORM and HTML5 export. Publishes to SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI, HTML5, video, PDF and Office files.
