Our verdict: LatencyMon is the standard free tool for finding out why a Windows PC crackles, drops audio or stutters under real-time loads. It names the drivers and processes with the longest interrupt and DPC times, so you know what to update or disable. It diagnoses problems but does not fix them.
About LatencyMon
LatencyMon by Resplendence checks whether a Windows PC is suitable for real-time audio and similar tasks. While it runs, it measures kernel timer latencies, the execution times of interrupt service routines (ISRs) and deferred procedure calls (DPCs), and hard pagefaults. Long ISR or DPC times can stop an audio program from delivering its buffers on time, which you hear as clicks, pops and dropouts.
After a test, LatencyMon shows a plain-language verdict and points to the kernel modules and processes responsible for the highest latencies, with detailed tables for deeper analysis. It works as an ISR, DPC and hard pagefault monitor. The free edition is for home use; the Professional edition adds a commercial license, an in-depth test for SMIs and CPU stalls, and interface customization.
What it does well
- Real-time suitability verdict. Tells you in plain language whether your PC can handle real-time audio.
- DPC and ISR monitor. Shows the highest execution times and the drivers responsible.
- Hard pagefault monitor. Finds processes that stall on disk paging during playback.
- Kernel timer latency. Measures how late timer interrupts are delivered.
- Detailed report. Lists all sampled data per driver, CPU and process.
Who it is for
Good fit
Musicians, streamers and gamers chasing audio crackles, dropouts or stutter on a Windows PC.
Look elsewhere
People looking for a one-click fix; LatencyMon only identifies the cause.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Free for home use
- Names the drivers behind latency spikes
- Plain-language verdict plus detailed data
- Small and quick to run
Cons
- Diagnoses only, does not fix anything
- Results need some driver knowledge to act on
- Commercial use requires the paid Professional edition
How to install LatencyMon
Run the official installer and start LatencyMon as administrator. Press Start, then use the PC normally or play audio for several minutes so the problem can occur. Then check the Drivers tab for the modules with the highest DPC and ISR times and try updating or disabling them one at a time.
Questions about LatencyMon
Is LatencyMon free?
Yes, for home use. Commercial use needs LatencyMon Professional, which also adds an in-depth SMI and CPU stall test.
How long should I run LatencyMon?
Long enough for the dropouts or stutter to happen while it is measuring, usually several minutes of normal use or audio playback.
