Our verdict: PCSX2 is the standard PlayStation 2 emulator and runs the large majority of the PS2 library well, often in much higher resolution. The modern Qt interface makes setup easy. You must dump the BIOS from your own PS2 console and use your own game discs.
About PCSX2
PCSX2 is an open-source project under the GNU GPL v3, developed by a volunteer team for more than twenty years. Version 2 introduced a new Qt interface, a game list with covers and a Big Picture mode for controllers.
PCSX2 does not include a BIOS or games. You need a BIOS dumped from your own PlayStation 2 and images of discs you own. The emulator needs a 64-bit CPU with SSE4.1; the developers recommend a CPU with AVX2 for demanding games.
What it does well
- Upscaling. Renders games at higher resolutions with texture filtering and anti-aliasing.
- Widescreen and patches. Built-in widescreen and no-interlacing patches for many games.
- Save states. Save and resume anywhere, plus virtual memory cards.
- Big Picture mode. Controller-friendly fullscreen interface for TV setups.
- RetroAchievements. Earn achievements in supported PS2 games with a free account.
Who it is for
Good fit
Players who want to replay their own PS2 games on a modern PC with better graphics.
