What is an MKV file and how do you open it?

An MKV file is a Matroska container: an envelope that holds one or more video tracks, any number of audio tracks, subtitles, chapters, cover images and fonts in a single file. The Matroska project stresses that it is not a codec. The extension tells you how the file is packed, not how the video inside is compressed.

That distinction explains almost every MKV problem on Windows. Two .mkv files can contain completely different video and audio codecs, so one plays perfectly in the Windows 11 Media Player while the next shows a black picture or plays without sound. MKV is popular for films and series, Blu-ray rips made with MakeMKV and recordings from OBS Studio, because a damaged or interrupted MKV recording stays playable up to the point where it broke.

How to tell what is inside an MKV file

Look at the first bytes rather than the name. Open the file in a hex editor such as HxD: a real Matroska file starts with 1A 45 DF A3, and a few bytes later you see the word matroska in plain text. If you see ftyp at offset 4 instead, the file is actually an MP4 that someone renamed; if it starts with RIFF, it is an AVI. The file type checker reads these bytes in your browser and names the real format.

To see the codecs, open the file in MediaInfo. It lists each track with its format: for example AVC or HEVC for video, AC-3, E-AC-3, DTS or AAC for audio, and UTF-8, ASS or PGS for subtitles. This is the information you need to decide whether Windows can play the file or whether you need another player.

How to open MKV files on Windows 11

Windows 11 can play MKV files in the built-in Media Player. Microsoft documents MKV support in Media Foundation, the Windows media framework, for common codecs including H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video and AAC, MP3, FLAC, Opus and Dolby audio. In practice three things go wrong:

  1. HEVC (H.265) and AV1 video need codec packs from the Microsoft Store: HEVC Video Extension and AV1 Video Extension. Without them you get sound but no picture, or an error.
  2. No sound on a new PC usually means AC-3 (Dolby Digital) audio. Microsoft states that starting with Windows 11 version 24H2 the AC-3 codec is no longer included with Windows, although many PC makers pre-install it and upgraded PCs keep it.
  3. Microsoft's MKV notes say Media Foundation plays the first video and first audio track, does not show subtitles by default and does not render subtitles that rely on embedded fonts. Styled ASS subtitles from anime releases often look wrong or do not appear.

The simplest fix for all three is a player with its own decoders. VLC and MPC-HC play nearly every MKV without codec packs, let you switch audio and subtitle tracks, and render ASS subtitles with their fonts. If you want MKV to work in every DirectShow program, not just one player, K-Lite Codec Pack installs LAV Filters system-wide.

Can you convert MKV to MP4?

Often you do not need to convert at all, only remux. If the video is H.264 or HEVC and the audio is AAC, AC-3 or E-AC-3, the streams can be copied into an MP4 container in seconds without any quality loss. LosslessCut does this from a window; with FFmpeg the command is ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c copy output.mp4.

Remuxing fails or loses data in three cases. MP4 does not carry ASS or PGS subtitles, so styled or Blu-ray subtitles are dropped. Several MP4 players ignore extra audio tracks, so keep the track you need first. And codecs that MP4 players rarely support, such as FLAC or Opus audio, may need re-encoding. In those cases convert with HandBrake, which re-encodes the video to H.264, HEVC or AV1 and the audio to AAC, at the cost of time and some quality.

To edit an MKV without converting it, for example to remove a foreign audio track, change the default subtitle or join episodes, use MKVToolNix. It rewrites the container and leaves the video and audio untouched.

Limitations of the MKV format

MKV is less universally supported than MP4 outside the PC. Phones, smart TVs, video editors and websites accept MP4 almost everywhere, while MKV support depends on the device. Many editors import MKV poorly or not at all, which is why OBS Studio users often record to MKV and remux to MP4 afterwards.

Browsers do not promise MKV playback. Chrome and Edge play some MKV files that happen to contain web codecs, but the web subset of Matroska is WebM, and that is what websites use. If a file came from the web, check whether it is really a WebM file.

Frequently asked questions

Is MKV better than MP4?

Neither is better for quality: both are containers, and the same video stream looks identical in either. MKV holds more kinds of tracks, such as styled subtitles and many audio languages. MP4 plays on more devices and in more editors.

Why does my MKV file play without sound in Windows 11?

Check the audio track in MediaInfo. The most common cause is AC-3 (Dolby Digital): Microsoft no longer includes the AC-3 codec in Windows 11 version 24H2, unless the PC maker pre-installed it or the PC was upgraded from an earlier version. Play the file in VLC or MPC-HC, which have their own audio decoders, or convert the audio to AAC.

Is it safe to open an MKV file?

An MKV file is not a program and cannot run by itself. The risk comes from fake files: a download named movie.mkv.exe, or an MKV that asks you to install a "codec" from an unknown site. Never install codecs that a video file or website asks for; use VLC or Microsoft's Store extensions instead.

Can I play MKV files on a TV or phone?

Many smart TVs and Android phones play MKV, but support for HEVC, DTS and styled subtitles varies. If the device refuses the file, remux it to MP4 with LosslessCut, or convert it with HandBrake's device presets.
