Our verdict: GAIA is AMD's free local AI agent and works best on Ryzen AI laptops, where models run on the NPU and integrated graphics. It indexes your documents, edits files and asks before every action. On other hardware it still runs, but it is clearly built and tuned for AMD's own chips.
About AMD GAIA
GAIA is an open-source project from AMD under the MIT license. The Windows installer lets you choose the desktop app (Agent UI), the terminal agent, or both, sharing the same local models. By default models run on the NPU and integrated GPU of an AMD Ryzen AI PC through the Lemonade server, and the first launch downloads a model of about 6 GB.
The agent answers questions from PDFs and notes indexed on your PC, reads and edits files in your home folder, searches code by meaning and queries CSV and Excel files. Writing files or running commands waits for your approval. Cloud use is opt-in: if you pick Fireworks AI with your own key, chats go to that provider. For developers, GAIA also offers a Python SDK, skills and evals.
What it does well
- Local document answers. Indexes PDFs and notes on your PC and answers from them without uploading.
- File and code work. Reads and edits files in your home folder and searches code by meaning.
- Spreadsheet queries. Loads CSV and Excel files into a local SQL scratchpad.
- Ryzen AI acceleration. Runs models on the NPU and integrated GPU of Ryzen AI processors.
- Approval prompts. Asks before writing files, editing them or running commands.
Who it is for
Good fit
Owners of AMD Ryzen AI 300-series or Ryzen AI Max PCs who want a private local AI agent.
Look elsewhere
PCs without an AMD Ryzen AI processor, and users who want a simple chatbot.
