Our verdict: LM Studio is the most polished way to try open language models on a Windows PC. Its model search shows what fits your hardware, and the built-in server lets other apps use your local models. It is free but closed source, and it needs an AVX2 CPU, plenty of RAM and ideally a GPU.
About LM Studio
LM Studio is a desktop app from Element Labs for running large language models on your own computer. You search for open models such as Qwen, Mistral, Gemma or gpt-oss inside the app, download them, and chat with them through llama.cpp. Once models are downloaded, LM Studio can work fully offline.
Besides chat, it can answer questions about your documents, connect to MCP servers and serve loaded models through a local OpenAI-compatible API for coding tools and scripts. A command-line tool, lms, and a headless service, llmster, cover server use. The developer also promotes Bionic, a separate agent app; the classic LM Studio app remains available on the same download page.
What it does well
- Model search and download. Finds open models and downloads them from inside the app.
- Offline chat. Runs models locally with no internet connection once they are downloaded.
- Chat with documents. Answers questions using files you attach to a conversation.
- Local API server. Serves models through an OpenAI-compatible API for other apps.
- MCP support. Connects Model Context Protocol servers to add tools.
Who it is for
Good fit
Enthusiasts and developers who want to run open models locally with a polished interface and API.
Look elsewhere
PCs without AVX2 or with under 16 GB RAM, and users who require open-source software.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Free to use
- Polished model search and download
- Works offline after models are downloaded
- OpenAI-compatible local server
Cons
- Closed source
- Needs an AVX2 CPU and lots of RAM
- Large installer and model files
How to install LM Studio
Run the installer from lmstudio.ai/download; it is a large download of about 600 MB. LM Studio requires a CPU with AVX2 and recommends at least 16 GB RAM and 4 GB of dedicated VRAM. Models are downloaded separately in the app and can take many gigabytes; check each model's license before using it at work.
