Our verdict: DataGrip brings JetBrains-grade code completion and refactoring to SQL, and it connects to most popular databases from one window. Learning and hobby use is free since 2025. For paid work it competes with free DBeaver, so the subscription has to earn its keep.
About DataGrip
DataGrip connects to PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQL Server, Oracle, SQLite and many other databases through JDBC drivers that it downloads for you. It understands your schema, so completion, inspections and rename refactoring work inside SQL queries and stored code.
The non-commercial license is the full product apart from Code With Me, which is not available. It requires a JetBrains Account, is for individuals only, renews yearly while used and sends anonymous usage statistics that cannot be disabled. Commercial users get a 30-day trial; JetBrains lists the individual subscription at $109 for the first year and $65 from the third year.
What it does well
- Schema-aware SQL editor. Completion, inspections and quick fixes based on your real tables and columns.
- Many databases. PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, SQLite and more in one tool.
- Data editor. Browse, filter and edit table data in a grid and export it to CSV, JSON or SQL.
- Query console. Runs queries with history, parameters and execution plans.
- Schema comparison. Compares database structures and generates migration scripts.
Who it is for
Good fit
Students, hobbyists and developers who write a lot of SQL against several database engines.
Look elsewhere
Commercial users who do not want a subscription, and people who only open a database occasionally.
