Our verdict: HeidiSQL is a fast, native database client that opens in a second and handles everyday MySQL and MariaDB work very well. It covers SQL Server, PostgreSQL and SQLite too, but support for those is less complete. For many different database types, DBeaver is broader.
About HeidiSQL
HeidiSQL was started by Ansgar Becker in 2002 and is still maintained by him as open-source software under the GPL. The Windows version is a native Delphi application, so it starts quickly and uses little memory compared with Java-based clients.
It connects to MariaDB, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Interbase, Firebird, ProxySQL and Redshift. You can browse and edit table data in a grid, create tables, views and stored routines, manage user privileges and export rows as SQL, CSV, JSON, Markdown and other formats.
What it does well
- Multiple connections. Keeps several servers open in tabs within one window.
- SSH tunnel and SSL. Connects to remote servers securely without a separate tunnel tool.
- Grid editing. Browse, filter and edit table rows directly.
- Export and transfer. Exports to SQL, CSV, HTML, JSON and more, or copies data straight to another server.
- Server tools. Manages user privileges, monitors and kills client processes, and repairs tables in batches.
Who it is for
Good fit
Web developers and admins who work mainly with MySQL or MariaDB and want a fast native tool.
Look elsewhere
People who need NoSQL databases, Oracle or ER diagrams.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Starts fast and uses little memory
- Strong MySQL and MariaDB support
- Built-in SSH tunnel
- Portable version available
Cons
- PostgreSQL and SQL Server support is less complete than MySQL support
- No ER diagrams or Oracle support
How to install HeidiSQL
The official installer is a combined 32/64-bit setup, and a portable ZIP is also available on the same page. On first launch, open the session manager, add a connection and choose the network type, such as MariaDB or MySQL (TCP/IP) or SSH tunnel. Use Help → Check for updates to get new releases.
