Our verdict: Hugin is the most capable free tool for stitching panoramas, with control over every step from alignment to blending. The simple interface handles a typical handheld panorama in a few clicks. Difficult scenes need the expert mode, and the learning curve there is steep.
About Hugin
Hugin is a long-running open-source project that builds on the Panorama Tools libraries. The team releases source code; the Windows 64-bit installer is a tested community build uploaded to the project's official SourceForge files section.
You load overlapping photos, Hugin finds matching control points between them, optimizes lens and camera position, and then remaps and blends the images. It supports many projections, from rectilinear to equirectangular for 360° panoramas, and can merge exposure brackets into HDR or exposure-fused results.
What it does well
- Automatic control points. The cpfind tool detects matching points between overlapping photos.
- Lens correction. Optimizes lens distortion, vignetting and exposure differences.
- Many projections. Rectilinear, cylindrical, equirectangular and more for 360° panoramas.
- Exposure blending. Combine bracketed shots into HDR or exposure-fused panoramas.
- Batch processing. The batch processor stitches several projects one after another.
Who it is for
Good fit
Photographers who want full control over stitching panoramas, including 360° and multi-row shots.
Look elsewhere
People who want a one-click result with no settings, or who work on Apple Silicon Macs.
