Our verdict: Hybrid is a power tool for encoding enthusiasts: it ties dozens of encoders and filters together, including VapourSynth scripts and hardware encoders. Its own author says it is not meant for beginners, and the Windows installer is over 2 GB.
About Hybrid
Hybrid is developed by Selur. It is a Qt-based front end that runs other tools in the background, such as FFmpeg, x264, x265, NVEncC, QSVEnc, mkvmerge and MP4Box, to convert almost any input to common audio and video formats and containers.
It is free for personal use and closed source; the author says the code may be released under the LGPL if development stops. Since 2019 all Windows versions are 64-bit only, and 2020.12.13.1 was the last version that supported Windows 7.
What it does well
- Many encoders. x264, x265, AV1 (aomenc, rav1e), VP9, ProRes and NVIDIA, Intel and AMD hardware encoders.
- VapourSynth and AviSynth filtering. Script-based filters for deinterlacing, denoising and restoration.
- Chapters and subtitles. Creates, passes through and edits chapters and subtitles for MKV, MP4 and Blu-ray.
- Job queue. Queue-based processing with profiles for audio, video and filters.
- Bitrate calculator. Works out the bitrate needed to hit a target file size.

How to install Hybrid
Download the Windows installer from selur.de; it is over 2 GB because it includes the tools Hybrid runs. Some AAC encoders cannot be bundled for licence reasons and must be added separately. Optional add-ons are offered through the author's Google Drive, linked on the downloads page.
