Our verdict: Nitro PDF Pro is a solid Acrobat alternative for people used to Microsoft Office, and the trial is fair: no card and no automatic charge. Pricing is aimed at businesses, though, and the subscription is billed yearly. Home users with occasional PDF work will find free editors cheaper.
About Nitro PDF Pro
Nitro PDF Pro is a desktop PDF editor with a ribbon interface modelled on Microsoft Office. It creates PDFs, edits text and images, recognizes text in scans with OCR, converts PDFs to Word, Excel and PowerPoint, combines files, builds fillable forms and sends documents for e-signature through Nitro Sign. Version 26 for Windows added an AI Tools tab for extracting data, creating forms automatically, redaction and an AI assistant.
The free trial lasts 14 days and needs a Nitro account but no credit card, and nothing is charged when it ends. After the trial the desktop features are locked until you buy a plan; only the web-based conversion tools in Nitro Workspace remain. Nitro PDF Standard costs $15 a month per user, billed annually as $180. Nitro PDF Classic is a one-time payment for a three-year, Windows-only license with the core tools.

- Edit and OCR. Edit PDF text and images, and make scans searchable and editable.
- Convert to Office. Exports PDFs to Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and back to PDF.
