Our verdict: Proton Pass offers one of the more generous free plans among cloud password managers: unlimited logins, notes and devices plus 10 email aliases. It needs a Proton account, and the built-in 2FA code generator is part of the paid Pass Plus plan.
About Proton Pass
Proton Pass comes from Proton AG, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail and Proton VPN. Your vault is encrypted on your device before it is synced, and the apps are open source and have been independently audited.
Besides passwords and notes, Proton Pass can create hide-my-email aliases that forward to your real inbox, so you can sign up for services without giving out your address. The free plan includes unlimited logins, notes and devices, 10 aliases and alerts for weak and reused passwords. Pass Plus adds an integrated 2FA authenticator, unlimited vaults and more alias options.
What it does well
- Unlimited free vault. No limit on logins, notes or devices on the free plan.
- Hide-my-email aliases. Creates forwarding addresses to keep your real email private; 10 on the free plan.
- Browser autofill. Extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave and Safari fill logins and aliases.
- Password health alerts. Warns about weak and reused passwords.
- Passkeys and import. Stores passkeys and imports data from other password managers or CSV files.
